1970 Topps #339 Johnny Edwards

About Johnny Edwards
Edwards caught 151 games in his first Houston season in 1969, batting .232 with 6 home runs. On May 1 at Cincinnati, he caught Don Wilson's no-hitter, a day after Jim Maloney had no-hit the Astros. His 1970 Topps #339 appeared in the third series.
Johnny Edwards caught for Cincinnati, St. Louis and Houston during a 14-season major league career. A left-handed hitter, he made 3 All-Star teams, won 2 Gold Gloves and finished with 1,106 hits and 81 home runs. He joined Ohio State's freshman baseball team as a walk-on while studying engineering. After playing in South Dakota's Basin League, he attracted several major league offers; his twin brother negotiated the contract he signed with Cincinnati. Edwards completed his engineering degree in 1963 by attending fall and winter quarters. He worked for General Electric during offseasons and later held engineering and management jobs in Houston, retiring from industry in 2002.
