About Doug Rader
Rader played 156 games in 1970, 154 of them at third base, and hit 25 home runs, second on the Astros. He batted .252, drove in 87 runs, scored 90 and collected the first of his Gold Gloves as the National League's best defensive third baseman. Card #355, from series 3, shows him with Houston.
Doug Rader was a third baseman who built his reputation on defense. Signed by the Houston Astros as an undrafted free agent out of Bloomington, Illinois, he reached the majors in 1967 and became Houston's everyday third baseman the following year. Over an eleven-year career split between the Astros, San Diego Padres, and Toronto Blue Jays, he hit 155 home runs and drove in 722 runs. He won five consecutive Gold Glove Awards at third base from 1970 through 1974. Nicknamed "the Red Rooster" for the thick red hair under his cap, he later moved into coaching and managing, leading the Texas Rangers, Chicago White Sox, and California Angels between 1983 and 1991 after retiring as a player in 1978.
