About Hector Torres

Torres reached Houston through two trades. San Francisco sent him to the California Angels for Dave Marshall on April 6, 1966, and on November 27, 1967 the Angels sent him to the Astros to complete a deal in which Houston had sent Jim Weaver to California. In 1969 he collected 11 hits in 69 at-bats and played shortstop in 22 games. His #272 in the third series of 1970 Topps lists the Astros.

Hector Epitacio Torres Marroquin, born September 16, 1945 in Monterrey, Nuevo Leon, Mexico, was a shortstop who played nine major league seasons between 1968 and 1977. Signed by the San Francisco Giants as an amateur free agent in 1962, he reached the majors with the Houston Astros. He then played for the Chicago Cubs, Montreal Expos, Houston again and the San Diego Padres before finishing his career with the Toronto Blue Jays in 1977, when he was the club's first-ever opening day shortstop. He hit the first grand slam in Blue Jays history, off Ron Guidry, on June 27, 1977. Over his career he batted .216 with 18 home runs and 115 RBI, playing mostly shortstop with time at second and third base. After retiring as a player he managed in the minor leagues and in the Mexican League, including a league title with the Florence Blue Jays in 1985.
