1970 Topps #114 Gene Michael

About Gene Michael
The 1969 season behind this card brought Michael 112 hits, 31 RBI and 41 runs. He played 119 games that year, 118 of them at shortstop, and stole 7 bases. He had started nine games through May, but the Yankees traded Tom Tresh to the Tigers and Michael became the regular shortstop. #114, in the first series, shows him with the Yankees.
Eugene Richard Michael, nicknamed Stick for his slender build, was a switch-hitting shortstop from Kent, Ohio, who played ten big league seasons (1966-1975) with the Pirates, Dodgers, Yankees and Tigers. Signed by Pittsburgh out of Kent State, where he also starred in basketball, he reached the majors in 1966 and became the Yankees' regular shortstop in 1969, batting a career-high .272 that year. A quick, smooth defender, he finished with a .229 average, 15 home runs and 226 RBIs over 973 games, and pulled off the hidden-ball trick five times in his career. After retiring as a player he managed the Yankees in 1981 and 1982 and the Chicago Cubs in 1986 and 1987, and he later served as Yankees general manager, where he is credited with rebuilding the farm system that produced the club's late-1990s dynasty.
