About Fritz Peterson

Card #142 comes from the second series. Peterson worked 260 1/3 innings in 1970 with a 2.90 ERA and 127 strikeouts. He had the league's best strikeout-to-walk ratio for the second straight year and the tenth-best winning percentage. In the All-Star Game, AL manager Earl Weaver brought him in to replace Catfish Hunter in the bottom of the ninth, with runners on first and second. Peterson faced one batter, Willie McCovey, who singled in a run before Mel Stottlemyre took over.

Fritz Peterson was a left-handed pitcher who spent 1966 to 1976 in the majors with the New York Yankees, Cleveland Indians and Texas Rangers. Signed by the Yankees as an amateur free agent in 1963 out of Northern Illinois University, he joined the New York rotation as a rookie in 1966 and posted a career record of 133-131. His best year came in 1970, when he went 20-11 and earned his only All-Star selection. Peterson led the American League in fewest walks per nine innings five years running, 1968 through 1972, and his lifetime ERA at the original Yankee Stadium was the best of any Yankee who pitched there. Traded to Cleveland in April 1974, he pitched two more seasons before finishing his career with the Rangers in 1976. Writers who covered the Yankees voted him the 1970 Good Guy Award.
