About Woody Woodward

A thumb injury slowed Woody Woodward in 1969, and Cincinnati put 21-year-old Darrel Chaney at shortstop. Woodward took over there on July 25 and finished the season hitting .261 in 97 games. His third-series card, #296, shows the Reds. On July 10, 1970, he hit the only home run of his career, a two-run shot off Ron Reed of the Braves in his 1,761st official at-bat. Cincinnati swept Pittsburgh in the NLCS, and he went 1-for-5 in the World Series loss to Baltimore.

William Frederick Woodward, known as Woody, was an infielder from Miami who signed with the Milwaukee Braves out of Florida State University after earning third-team All-American honors. He spent nine major league seasons, 1963 to 1971, as a shortstop and second baseman for the Milwaukee/Atlanta Braves and Cincinnati Reds. His best season came in 1966 with Atlanta, when he set career highs in batting average, hits and RBI. Traded to Cincinnati in 1968, he played shortstop and third base for the Reds. He retired after the 1971 season and later served as general manager of the New York Yankees, Philadelphia Phillies, and Seattle Mariners.
