1970 Topps #122 George Stone

About George Stone
Stone's 1970 workload was heavier than in 1969, with 30 starts, nine complete games and two shutouts. He placed among the National League's ERA leaders through July 10, then lost eight of his next nine decisions through August 5. His first-series card, #122, pictures him with the Braves.
George Stone was a left-handed pitcher who spent nine seasons in the majors with the Atlanta Braves and New York Mets. A Louisiana Tech product signed by the Braves in 1966, he reached Atlanta as a September call-up in 1967 and became a rookie regular in 1968, working his way into the starting rotation. In 1969 he went 13-10 with a 3.65 ERA and helped the Braves win the National League West before the club fell to the Mets in the NLCS. His success stemmed from two different change-ups and a slider taught to him by Braves general manager Paul Richards. Joining the Mets in 1973, he had his finest year, going 12-3 with a 2.80 ERA to lead the National League in winning percentage. Arm trouble limited him in 1974 and 1975, his final season. He finished with a 60-57 career record, a 3.89 ERA and 590 strikeouts.
