The story on this card
On June 12, 1969, Hill started at Atlanta Stadium opposite Dick Selma of the Chicago Cubs and took the loss after 2 1/3 innings. Al Spangler homered off him in the second inning, and the four earned runs he allowed left a 15.43 ERA. He struck out two and walked one. Topps listed him on #172 in the 1970 set, a Braves Rookies card shared with Ralph Garr; it is the rookie card of both men and came in the second series. Garry Hill, a right-handed pitcher from Garinger High School in Charlotte and the University of North Carolina, was a first-round pick of the Atlanta Braves in the 1967 June secondary draft and made one major league start, in 1969.
Garr's first Topps card is a shared rookie issue with Garry Hill, #172 in the second series, both pictured with the Atlanta Braves. His Atlanta time to that point was brief: 11 games in 1968 and 22 in 1969, when he hit .222. In 1970 he was optioned to Richmond at the end of May, and he hit an International League record .386 there. Ralph Garr, the Road Runner, was an outfielder from Monroe, Louisiana, who played 1,317 games between 1968 and 1980 for the Braves, White Sox and Angels and stole 172 bases.
