About Bob Didier

The Topps All-Star Rookie trophy on Bob Didier's second-series #232 recognizes his 1969 season, when he also finished fourth in National League Rookie of the Year voting, behind Ted Sizemore, Coco Laboy and Al Oliver. Braves vice president Paul Richards and manager Luman Harris believed he would help defensively but did not expect him to hit above .200. It was the first year he caught a knuckleball pitcher, and he led the league in passed balls with 27.

Bob Didier was a switch-hitting catcher who broke in with the Atlanta Braves in 1969 at age 20, winning the starting job after Joe Torre was traded away that spring. He was known for handling the knuckleball: he caught Phil Niekro through a 23-win season and later caught Hoyt Wilhelm as well, earning praise from Braves brass for his work behind the plate even as passed balls piled up chasing the pitch. Didier appeared in 114 games as a rookie and helped Atlanta win the NL West, though he went hitless in the Braves' three-game NLCS loss to the Mets. His playing time and production fell off after 1969, and he moved on to the Detroit Tigers and Boston Red Sox before his final major league game in 1974. After retiring as a player in 1976, he managed in the minor leagues for 16 seasons, coached in the majors for the Oakland Athletics and Seattle Mariners, and scouted for the New York Yankees. Career line: .229 with 172 hits and 51 RBI over six seasons, all with Atlanta, Detroit and Boston.
