About this card

The story on this card

Juan Marichal of the San Francisco Giants led the National League in ERA in 1969, and on September 12 he threw a 1-0 one-hitter against the Reds. Steve Carlton of the St. Louis Cardinals was second at 2.17, with 17 wins and 210 strikeouts. On September 15 he struck out 19 New York Mets in a nine-inning game and lost 4-3. Bob Gibson, also of St. Louis, followed at 2.18, with 20 wins and 28 complete games. Topps put the three on #67 in the League Leaders subset of the first series in 1970.

Juan Marichal, the high-kicking Dominican Dandy, won 191 games in the 1960s, more than any other pitcher. He made nine All-Star teams, won 243 games in all and in 1983 became the first Dominican-born Hall of Famer. Phillies left-hander Steve Carlton included martial arts and meditation in his training. One exercise involved twisting his fist down through a five-gallon bucket of rice. He worked with trainer Gus Hoefling on his conditioning routine. Bob Gibson pitched all seventeen of his seasons for the Cardinals. A two-time Cy Young winner and two-time World Series Most Valuable Player, he posted a 1.12 earned run average in 1968. Hall of Fame, 1981.
