About Earl Weaver
Umpire Shag Crawford ejected Weaver for arguing balls and strikes in Game 4 of the 1969 World Series, making him the first manager thrown out of a Series game in 34 years. His second-series manager card, #148, shows him with the Orioles. The 1970 club went 108-54 and spent all but nine days in first place. It came from behind to win 42 games and closed with 11 straight victories, then swept the Twins in the playoffs and beat Cincinnati in five games for the World Series title.
Earl Weaver managed the Baltimore Orioles from July 1968 through 1982 and again in 1985-1986, compiling a 1,480-1,060 record. He played second base in the minors from 1948 to 1960 and began managing as a player-manager in 1956. After two winning seasons at Triple-A Rochester, he joined Baltimore as first-base coach and replaced Hank Bauer as manager on July 11, 1968. Weaver kept cards and notebooks recording how individual hitters fared against particular pitchers, using those matchups to set his lineups. He also platooned Gary Roenicke and John Lowenstein in left field. Known as the Earl of Baltimore, he was ejected 94 times during his major league managerial career. The Veterans Committee elected him to the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1996.
