1970 Topps #661 Jerry Robertson

About Jerry Robertson
A 3-2 win over Bob Gibson and the Cardinals on September 6, 1969 was Robertson's fifth and last in the majors. Detroit manager Mayo Smith expected him to compete for a starting job in 1970, but Robertson was moved to the bullpen after spring training, and on May 13 he was sent down to Triple-A Toledo. He went 3-2 with a 3.64 ERA in seven games there. His card, #661, is a high number from the seventh series and carries the Tigers name.
Jerry Robertson grew up on a farm near Winchester, Kansas, where baseball was not offered at his high school; he pitched summer ball in the Ban Johnson League before starring at Washburn University in Topeka. The St. Louis Cardinals took the right-hander in the 27th round of the 1965 draft, and he worked mostly as a reliever through the minors, leading his team in ERA in each of his first three pro seasons. Left unprotected in the October 1968 expansion draft, he was claimed by the Montreal Expos and made the club in 1969, pitching scoreless relief in the first game in franchise history before moving into the starting rotation that May. The Expos traded him to the Detroit Tigers that winter for pitcher Joe Sparma, and 1970 was his final major-league season; a broken finger and elbow trouble in the minors ended his playing career in 1971. Robertson later became a civic leader in Topeka, serving as executive director of the YMCA and as athletic director at Washburn University, where he was inducted into the school's athletic hall of fame in 1982.
