The story on this card
1970 Topps #422 is the Royals team card, from the fourth series. Kansas City opened 1969 as an expansion club, created after Charles Finley moved the Athletics to Oakland and Senator Stuart Symington threatened to have baseball's antitrust exemption revoked. Ewing Kauffman received the franchise on January 11, 1968, and hired Cedric Tallis as general manager. Joe Gordon managed the team at Municipal Stadium, where it drew 902,414 fans. The Royals played their first game there on April 8 and finished 69-93 with one tie, fourth in the new American League West. They scored 586 runs and allowed 688. Lou Piniella was the American League Rookie of the Year. Paul Splittorff, a 25th-round pick in the 1968 draft, later won 166 games for the club.
