1970 Topps #421 Pat Dobson

About Pat Dobson
The Padres uniform on #421, a fourth-series 1970 Topps card, reflects the December 4, 1969 trade that sent Pat Dobson and Dave Campbell from Detroit to San Diego for Joe Niekro. On opening day in San Diego he beat the Braves 8-3. He finished 14-15 with a 3.76 ERA and 185 strikeouts as staff ace of the last-place Padres.
Pat Dobson was a right-handed pitcher who spent eleven seasons in the majors with Detroit, San Diego, Baltimore, Atlanta, the New York Yankees and Cleveland. He broke in with the Tigers in 1967 after years in the minors and winter ball, working mostly in relief, including Detroit's 1968 championship season, when he appeared in the World Series against St. Louis. Traded to San Diego, he became a full-time starter for the first time in 1970. A trade to Baltimore paid off immediately: in 1971 Dobson won twenty games as one of four Orioles pitchers to reach that mark, a feat matched only once before in major league history, and he made the All-Star team the following season. With the Yankees he won nineteen games in 1974. He finished his career with 122 wins and 1,301 strikeouts. Over 414 games he posted a 3.54 ERA. After his playing days he was a pitching coach for the Brewers, Padres, Royals and Orioles.
