1970 Topps #234 Tommy Dean

About Tommy Dean
Dean played 61 games for San Diego in 1970, 55 of them at shortstop. He hit .222 with 35 hits in 158 at-bats. He hit two home runs, drove in 13 runs and scored 18. His 1970 Topps card, #234, came in the second series and shows him with San Diego.
Tommy Douglas Dean was a shortstop born August 30, 1945, in Iuka, Mississippi. Los Angeles Dodgers general manager Buzzie Bavasi signed him out of Iuka High School for a $60,000 bonus in 1964. Bavasi, who was trying to rebuild the Dodgers around pitching, speed, and defense, considered Dean a top young prospect. Dean reached the majors with Los Angeles in 1967, playing 12 games, and spent 1968 in the minors. Nine days into the 1969 season, Bavasi, by then running the expansion San Diego Padres, acquired Dean, who became the club's most-used shortstop that year, starting 81 of its 162 games. He played three seasons in San Diego before his final game in 1971. Across four big-league seasons he played 215 games and batted .180. His 95 hits included 15 doubles and four home runs.
