1970 Topps #44 Roberto Pena

About Roberto Pena
On May 10, 1969, at St. Louis, Roberto Pena went 4-for-5 with a grand slam off Steve Carlton in a 5-3 Padres victory. The slam was one of 4 home runs he hit that season, when he batted .250 with 30 RBI. His #44, in the first series of the 1970 Topps set, shows him with the Padres. He was listed as born in 1940 throughout his playing career, though he was born in 1937.
Roberto Pena was a Dominican shortstop who reached the majors with the Chicago Cubs in 1965 after coming over from the Pittsburgh system. In his April 12, 1965 debut he homered off Bob Gibson and drove in three runs but made three errors in an 11-inning tie. The Cubs sent him to the minors that June and again in 1966, and he reached the Phillies in 1968, where he became the majors' first Dominican everyday shortstop. He started the inaugural game in San Diego Padres history in 1969, then went to the Oakland Athletics and Milwaukee Brewers, hitting the first grand slam in Brewers history. Over six big league seasons he played shortstop, second base, third base and first base. He played winter ball at shortstop for the Aguilas Cibaenas, who retired his uniform number after his death.
