1970 Topps #284 Jack Baldschun

About Jack Baldschun
Cincinnati planned to release Baldschun in February 1969, but Oakland asked for a 30-day trial and he was the last player cut in its Arizona camp. San Diego then signed him, and he posted a 4.79 ERA with 67 strikeouts in 77 innings. He was released on April 5, 1970, and sent to Salt Lake City as a player-coach; a July recall brought his last 12 big-league games, the final one on August 21. His Padres card is #284, from the third series.
Jack Edward Baldschun (1936-2023) was a right-handed relief pitcher who spent nine major league seasons with the Philadelphia Phillies, Cincinnati Reds, and San Diego Padres between 1961 and 1970. Selected by Philadelphia in the 1960 Rule 5 draft, he relied on a screwball that kept hitters off balance. He became the Phillies' closer, leading the club in saves for three straight years, and earned a reputation, in manager Gene Mauch's words, for a rubber arm and ideal temperament. A December 1965 trade sent him from Philadelphia to Baltimore and then, days later, to Cincinnati as part of the deal that brought Frank Robinson to the Orioles. He finished his career with a 48-41 record, 60 saves and a 3.69 ERA. He struck out 555 batters in 457 games, all of them in relief. After baseball he settled in Green Bay, Wisconsin, and worked in lumber sales.
