About Larry Jaster

Montreal sent Jaster to Atlanta on December 2, 1969 for pitcher Jim Britton and minor league catcher Don Johnson. When Ron Reed broke a collarbone in the spring, Jaster competed for a starting job, but it went to Jim Nash, and Jaster worked strictly in relief. He had a 3.14 ERA into mid-May, then gave up a grand slam to Ron Fairly of the Expos on June 18 and was optioned to Richmond four days later. His 1970 card is #124, from series 1, and shows him with Montreal.

Larry Jaster was a left-handed pitcher from Midland, Michigan, who reached the majors with the St. Louis Cardinals in September 1965 after a bonus-baby signing and a bumpy minor league climb that once had him threatening to quit. As a 1966 rookie he went 11-5 and shut out the pennant-winning Los Angeles Dodgers five straight times, a feat that had not been done consecutively in the post-1900 era and drew praise from Sandy Koufax. Jaster remained a Cardinals starter through 1968, pitched in relief in both the 1967 and 1968 World Series, then was taken by Montreal in the 1968 expansion draft. On April 14, 1969, he threw the first pitch in a major league regular-season game played in Canada. He closed his career with the Atlanta Braves in 1972 and later worked as a minor league pitching coach and coordinator.
