1970 Topps #277 Paul Doyle

About Paul Doyle
The Angels got Doyle in November 1969 as the player to be named later in the Hoyt Wilhelm trade and sent him to Jim Fregosi's Ponce Lions, who won the Puerto Rican title. On April 11, 1970, he earned his first Angels save, a 6-3 win at Kansas City that preserved Andy Messersmith's victory. He went 3-1 with five saves for California, then 0-2 with two saves for San Diego after an August sale. Card #277 is a third-series Angels card and his rookie card.
Paul Doyle was a left-handed reliever who appeared in 87 games for the Atlanta Braves, California Angels and San Diego Padres between 1969 and 1972. Born in Philadelphia and raised in Huron, Ohio, he signed with the Detroit Tigers organization in 1959, then pitched in the Yankees, Giants and Astros systems before Houston traded him to Atlanta in December 1968, a ten-year climb across five organizations. Atlanta general manager Paul Richards taught him a slider in the spring of 1969, and Doyle debuted on May 28 against the St. Louis Cardinals, retiring Julian Javier, Curt Flood and Joe Torre in order and later picking Mike Shannon off first. He went 2-0 with a 2.08 ERA and four saves for the Braves' National League West champions, and in Game 2 of the NLCS he struck out three Mets in his one inning of work. Jim Fregosi called his move to first the best he had seen from a left-hander. A sore left shoulder ended his career in 1972, and he finished 5-3 with a 3.79 ERA and 11 saves. Afterward he worked in the truck brake business with a brother.
