1970 Topps #156 Eddie Fisher

About Eddie Fisher
Fisher pitched in 67 games for the 1970 Angels and went 4-4 with eight saves. His 3.04 ERA came over 130 1/3 innings. Two of the appearances were starts, and he struck out 74. Card #156 is a second-series card in the 1970 Topps set and lists him with California.
Eddie Gene Fisher (1936-2025) was a right-handed knuckleball pitcher, born in Shreveport, Louisiana and raised in southwestern Oklahoma, where he pitched Friendship High School to a 1954 state championship before starring at the University of Oklahoma. He signed with the San Francisco Giants and reached the majors on June 22, 1959. Across fifteen big-league seasons he worked for the Giants, Chicago White Sox, Baltimore Orioles, Cleveland Indians, California Angels and St. Louis Cardinals. After Chicago acquired the great knuckleballer Hoyt Wilhelm in January 1963, Fisher came under his tutelage, and manager Al Lopez reckoned that by 1965 his pupil was throwing the pitch about 85 percent of the time. Fisher made the American League All-Star team in 1965 and won a World Series ring with the 1966 Orioles without appearing in the Series. He finished in 1973 with an 85-70 record, 81 saves and a 3.41 ERA. He appeared in 690 games, and at retirement he was the American League's all-time leader in relief appearances. He was inducted into the University of Oklahoma Baseball Hall of Fame in 2007 and the Oklahoma Sports Hall of Fame in 2008.
