About Manny Mota

Mota played 124 games for Los Angeles in 1970, including 111 in the outfield. He batted .305 with 63 runs and 11 stolen bases. His 1970 Dodgers card was second-series #157. On May 16, a foul ball he hit at Dodger Stadium struck spectator Alan Fish, who died four days later.

Manny Mota signed with the New York Giants in 1957 for a $400 bonus. His minor league path took him from Michigan City to Tacoma before his major league debut with San Francisco in 1962. He played twenty major league seasons and batted .304, becoming a pinch-hitting specialist with the Dodgers. He established the major league career pinch-hit record in 1979; Lenny Harris broke it in 2001. Mota coached Los Angeles from 1980 through 2013 and also worked on its Spanish-language broadcasts. His father, Andres, gave him the nickname El Chory, roughly meaning Shorty. Two sons, Andy and Jose, also reached the majors.
