1970 Topps #54 Jeff Torborg

About Jeff Torborg
On July 20, 1970, Torborg caught Bill Singer's no-hitter at Dodger Stadium, a 5-0 win over Philadelphia in which Singer struck out 10 and walked none. It was the second no-hitter Torborg had caught. He hit .231 with 1 home run and 17 RBI that year. His #54, from the first series, pictures him with the Dodgers.
Jeff Torborg was a defensive catcher who could handle a pitching staff, playing for the Los Angeles Dodgers and California Angels from 1964 to 1973. A Rutgers All-American who hit .537 in his final college season, he signed with the Dodgers in 1963 and spent most of his career as a backup, not becoming a starter until 1973, his last season. Torborg caught three no-hitters for three different pitchers: Sandy Koufax's 1965 perfect game, Bill Singer's 1970 no-hitter and the first of Nolan Ryan's seven no-hitters in 1973. That made him one of a handful of catchers to catch a no-hitter in each league. He finished with a .214 average, 8 home runs and 101 RBI. After his playing days Torborg became a manager, coach and broadcaster. He led the Cleveland Indians, Chicago White Sox, New York Mets, Montreal Expos and Florida Marlins, and won American League Manager of the Year with the White Sox in 1990.
