About Jerry McNertney

Jerry McNertney struck out for the final out of the Seattle Pilots' last game on October 2, 1969, in a season Jim Bouton, his Seattle teammate, chronicled in Ball Four. McNertney hit .241 with 99 hits that year. In 1967 he had led American League catchers with a 54.8 percent caught-stealing rate. Card #158, a second-series issue, still lists him with the Pilots.

Gerald Edward McNertney, born August 7, 1936 in Boone, Iowa, was a right-handed catcher who spent nine seasons in the majors. Signed by the Chicago White Sox in 1958 out of Iowa State University, he began as a first baseman and outfielder in the minors before converting to catcher in 1961. He debuted with the White Sox in 1964 at age 27, then returned from 1966 through 1973 with the White Sox, the Seattle Pilots and Milwaukee Brewers, the St. Louis Cardinals, and finally the Pittsburgh Pirates. In 1969 with Seattle he set career highs in at-bats, home runs and runs batted in while also leading the league's catchers in runners caught stealing. Across 590 career games he hit .237 with 27 home runs and 163 RBI. After retiring as a player he coached in the bullpen for the New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox.
