1970 Topps #249 Bob Locker

About Bob Locker
The Seattle Pilots moved to Milwaukee at the end of spring training in 1970, so Locker's #249, a second-series card, still carries the Pilots name. He went with the club and pitched 28 games for the Brewers before Oakland bought his contract on June 15. He allowed no runs in his first seven innings for the Athletics, and on August 12 he threw 5 2/3 scoreless innings against Cleveland, the longest outing of his career. He finished 3-4 with a 3.07 ERA and 7 saves.
Bob Locker was a right-handed relief pitcher from George, Iowa, who built his career on a sinker he could throw with full fastball velocity. A geology graduate of Iowa State, he lost two seasons to military service before reaching the majors at age 27 in 1965. He pitched for the Chicago White Sox, Seattle Pilots, Milwaukee Brewers, Oakland Athletics and Chicago Cubs. In Chicago he worked in a bullpen that led the league in ERA for four straight years, and in Oakland he was part of the team that won the 1972 World Series. He finished with a 2.75 career ERA and 95 saves over 576 games, all in relief.
