1970 Topps #224 Steve Barber

About Steve Barber
Seattle released Barber before the 1970 season, but his second-series Topps #224 still listed the Pilots. He had gone 4-7 with a 4.80 ERA in 25 games for them in 1969. In 1970 he pitched for the Cubs and Braves, going 0-2 with a 6.20 ERA in 10 games, two of them starts.
Steve Barber pitched left-handed for 7 major league clubs over 15 seasons, finishing with 121 wins, 1,309 strikeouts and a 3.36 ERA. Baltimore scout Walter Youse sent him to the Orioles' minor league camp in 1957, where he earned a contract. After 3 seasons in the low minors, Barber demanded that general manager Lee MacPhail send him to the Florida Instructional League. Harry Brecheen worked on his delivery and slider there. Barber later owned automotive businesses and worked as a dealership manager and hearing-aid salesman. He also drove a school bus for children with disabilities. The Orioles inducted him into their team Hall of Fame in 1988.

Why does this card say Seattle Pilots?
Because the card prints the Seattle Pilots, and it is correct as printed: the franchise played the 1970 season as the Milwaukee Brewers, but thirty 1970 Topps cards print the Pilots - the #713 team card, #556 Dave Bristol's manager card, the #88 Pilots Rookie Stars and twenty-seven player cards. 1970 Topps is the second and last Topps flagship set with Seattle Pilots cards.
