1970 Topps #359 Phil Roof

About Phil Roof
Roof hit a career-high 13 home runs in 1970, his first season with the franchise that moved from Seattle to Milwaukee during spring training and became the Brewers. He caught 107 of his 110 games and batted .227 with 37 RBI. His third-series Topps card, #359, still lists the Seattle Pilots.
Phil Roof caught in the majors for 15 seasons, beginning with Milwaukee in 1961 and ending with Toronto in 1977. A Paducah, Kentucky native, he signed with the Braves in 1959 after graduating from St. Mary High School. He played 857 major league games and finished with 463 hits and a .215 average. He hit 43 home runs and drove in 210 runs. In 1974 he threw out 48.8 percent of attempted base stealers, second among American League catchers. Toronto acquired him two weeks before the 1976 expansion draft, making him the first Blue Jays player. After his playing career, Roof coached in the bullpens of the Padres, Mariners and Cubs. He managed 16 years in Minnesota's minor league system, earned his 1,000th managerial victory in 2004 and retired from managing in 2005.
