About Wayne Comer

The best game of Wayne Comer's career came on May 16, 1969, when he hit two homers and drove in four for Seattle in a 10-9 win at Fenway Park. Card #323, a third-series issue, carries the Pilots name, though the club had become the Milwaukee Brewers. Comer opened 1970 0-for-15 and lost his center-field job. His first hit, a game-winning single in the ninth against Washington on May 10, came the same day the Brewers traded him to the Senators for Hank Allen and Ron Theobald.

Harry Wayne Comer was a Virginia-born outfielder who reached the majors with the Detroit Tigers in September 1967 after leading the International League in runs and total bases for the Toledo Mud Hens. He spent 1968 as a Tigers reserve, made the World Series roster, and delivered a pinch-hit single off Joe Hoerner in Game 3 for a perfect 1.000 Series average. Selected by the Seattle Pilots in the 1968 expansion draft, Comer became an everyday outfielder, leading the club in runs scored and pacing American League outfielders in double plays turned. He continued with the Pilots' successor Milwaukee Brewers and the Washington Senators, then closed his major league career back with Detroit. Comer played 316 games over five big-league seasons before finishing his professional career in the minors. He later coached high school baseball for many years in his native Virginia.
