1970 Topps #554 Tom Timmermann

About Tom Timmermann
Timmermann set a Detroit record with 61 appearances in 1970, passing the 55 Larry Sherry made in 1966, and finished third in the American League with 27 saves. Mayo Smith had called the Tigers bullpen the worst he had seen; the Detroit writers named Timmermann Tiger of the Year. His #554 rookie card came in the sixth series, with the Tigers.
Tom Timmermann was a 6-foot-4 right-hander who pitched in the majors for the Detroit Tigers from 1969 to 1973 and the Cleveland Indians in 1973 and 1974. He grew up on an Illinois farm, attended Aviston High School and Southern Illinois University Carbondale, and signed with Detroit in 1960. He then spent nine and a half years in the Tigers' farm system before his debut on June 18, 1969, when he held the Yankees hitless for 1 1/3 innings in relief. In the Puerto Rican Winter League in October 1968 he pitched eight shutouts for Criollas de Caguas. His career ran 15 professional seasons, ending in 1974 with Toledo and Oklahoma City, and in the majors he went 35-35 with 35 saves and a 3.78 ERA. Timmermann died on November 14, 2025.
