1970 Topps #698 Tom Tresh

About Tom Tresh
Tresh hit 13 home runs for the Tigers in the half season after his mid-June 1969 trade, on a right knee that needed more cartilage surgery. His 1970 card, #698, is a seventh-series high number that lists him with Detroit. That spring Tigers management told him to report to the minors to rehabilitate the knee, and he asked for his release instead.
Tom Tresh was a switch-hitting shortstop and outfielder who played nine big-league seasons, 1961 through 1969, with the New York Yankees until a midseason 1969 trade sent him home to the Detroit Tigers. Born in Detroit, the son of big-league catcher Mike Tresh, he starred at Allen Park High School and went back to Central Michigan University every off-season until he had his physical education degree. Named the International League's Rookie of the Year at Richmond in 1961, he took the Yankees' shortstop job the next spring while Tony Kubek served a National Guard call-up. Tresh hit .286 with 20 home runs and 93 runs batted in and was voted American League Rookie of the Year by both the Baseball Writers and The Sporting News. His three-run homer off Jack Sanford broke an eighth-inning tie in Game Five of the 1962 World Series, and New York beat San Francisco in seven. Tresh was an All-Star in 1962 and 1963 and won a Gold Glove for his outfield work in 1965, but a right knee injury in 1967 spring training cut into his speed and his statistics; Detroit released him in the spring of 1970 at 31. He later worked at his alma mater, helped invent a sliding-technique training aid, and died in Venice, Florida, in 2008.
