The story on this card
Cincinnati won 102 games in 1970 in Sparky Anderson's first year as manager, started 70-30 and took the National League West by 14 1/2 games over the Dodgers. The lineup featured NL MVP Johnny Bench, Tony Perez, Pete Rose, Bobby Tolan and Lee May, while a young staff that included 18-game winner Gary Nolan and 20-game winner Jim Merritt supported them. Rookie Wayne Simpson was 14-3 before an arm injury ended his season. The Reds moved from Crosley Field into Riverfront Stadium on June 30, swept Pittsburgh in the NLCS for their first pennant since 1961, then lost the World Series to Baltimore in five games. Their one win came on Lee May's three-run homer in Game 4. The Reds' team card is #357 in the 1971 Topps set, from the third series.
