About Danny Cater

Danny Cater started the 1971 season badly, describing himself as off stride and hitting under too many balls. During a brief June layoff with an ankle injury, with his average at .219, he borrowed teammate Ron Swoboda's smaller bat, and by September 11 he had raised it to .276. That day a pitch from Rich Hand of the Indians broke his finger and ended his season, with 118 hits, 4 home runs and 50 RBI. Cater is a Yankee on #358, from the third series.

Danny Anderson Cater was born February 25, 1940, in Austin, Texas, and signed with the Philadelphia Phillies at age 18 in June 1958. He played twelve major league seasons, 1964-1975, for the Phillies, White Sox, Kansas City/Oakland Athletics, Yankees, Red Sox and Cardinals, filling in at first base, third base and the outfield. He was the 1968 American League batting runner-up at .290, behind Carl Yastrzemski's .301, the lowest average ever to win a major league batting title, and led American League first basemen with a .995 fielding percentage that year. He hit a career-best .301 for the 1970 Yankees. Traded to Boston before the 1972 season along with Mario Guerrero for reliever Sparky Lyle, he retired with a .276 average, 1,229 hits, 66 home runs and 519 RBI, and later worked at the Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts office in Austin.
