About this card

This is one of the 44 Rookie Stars cards in the 1971 Topps set, each carrying two or three players under a club, league or position title. All 44 count as rookie cards.

The story on this card

Topps put Colson and Bobby Mitchell together on #111, a Rookie Stars card from the first series of the 1971 set, and it was the first card for both men. Both were printed with the New York Yankees. The card has the black borders for which the 1971 set is best known. Loyd Colson, a right-handed Yankees pitcher from Wellington, Texas, appeared in one major league game, on September 25, 1970, against Detroit. He worked two innings, struck out three and finished with a 4.50 ERA.

Mitchell hit .182 with 2 home runs in 35 games for the 1971 Brewers after arriving from the Yankees in midseason. Card #111 is a first-series Rookie Stars card that pairs him with pitcher Loyd Colson, both pictured as Yankees, and it is the rookie card for each man. Bobby Mitchell was an outfielder and designated hitter who played 273 games for the Yankees and Brewers from 1970 to 1975, hitting .235 with 21 home runs, then played four seasons in Japan for the Nippon-Ham Fighters.
