1971 Topps #510 Ken Harrelson

About Ken Harrelson
Harrelson appeared in 17 games for Cleveland in 1970, batting .282 with one home run in 39 at-bats. His 1971 Topps card, #510, comes from the fourth series and lists him with Cleveland. Rookie Chris Chambliss took over first base in 1971, and Harrelson played 52 games, batting .199 with five home runs, before his last major league game on June 20.
Kenneth Smith Harrelson, born September 4, 1941 in Woodruff, South Carolina, played nine major league seasons (1963-1971) as a first baseman and outfielder for the Kansas City Athletics, Washington Senators, Boston Red Sox and Cleveland Indians. Signed by Kansas City out of high school, he reached the majors in 1963 and became known as "Hawk" for his distinctive profile. Outspoken criticism of Athletics owner Charlie Finley led to his release in 1967, and he signed with Boston for a lucrative sum, helping the Red Sox win the pennant that year before losing the World Series to St. Louis. In 1968 he had his finest season, leading the American League in RBI and earning his only All-Star selection. Traded to Cleveland in 1969, he retired mid-season in 1971 to pursue a professional golf career. Harrelson finished with a .239 average, 131 home runs and 421 RBI, and is credited with helping popularize the batting glove. He later spent decades as a Chicago White Sox broadcaster.
