The story on this card
The Oakland club on card #624 had just completed its third season in Oakland, and 1970 was the year owner Charlie Finley formally shortened the name to the A's, adding an apostrophe-s to the cap and uniform emblem. John McNamara's team went 89-73 and finished second in the American League West, scoring 678 runs and allowing 593 while playing at the Oakland Coliseum. The roster carried four future Hall of Famers: Reggie Jackson, Catfish Hunter, Rollie Fingers and Tony La Russa. Jackson went into the year after a salary dispute, demanding $60,000 against Finley's $40,000 offer before both settled at $45,000, and he hit 23 home runs with a .237 average. The card belongs to the 1971 Topps team-card subset and was issued in series five.
