About Pat Jarvis

Jarvis went 16-16 with a 3.61 ERA in 1970 and struck out 173. On May 12 at Wrigley Field he gave up Ernie Banks' 500th home run in the second inning, and the Cubs won in 11 innings. His distinctive follow-through, which sometimes left him landing on both knees, drew comparisons to Jim Bunning that summer, and some were calling him the Fred Astaire of the National League. His 1971 Topps card, #623 in the fifth series, shows him with the Braves.

Robert Patrick Jarvis was born March 18, 1941, in Carlyle, Illinois, and pitched at Murray State University before signing with the Chicago Cubs organization. Traded to the Milwaukee Braves system in October 1963, he worked his way up through Austin and Richmond before a midseason callup in 1966, when he won six games down the stretch for Atlanta and was voted the club's top rookie. From 1967 through 1970 he won 60 games, and in 1968 he went 16-12 with a 2.60 ERA and 14 complete games. He started Game 3 of the 1969 National League Championship Series against the Mets. Standing 5 foot 10, he earned the nickname "The Little Bulldog" during his major-league career. He finished with an 85-73 record and a 3.58 ERA across eight seasons with the Braves and Montreal Expos, the last in 1973.
