1971 Topps #8 Mike McQueen

About Mike McQueen
Hank Aaron compared McQueen to Warren Spahn that spring, and he opened 1971 in the Braves bullpen. Injuries limited him to 17 games, but he went 4-1 with a 3.54 ERA, the best winning total of his career. He struck out 38 batters in 56 innings. His 1971 Topps card is #8, a first-series issue that lists him with the Atlanta Braves.
Mike McQueen was a left-handed pitcher from Oklahoma City who worked 73 major league games between 1969 and 1974 for the Atlanta Braves and Cincinnati Reds, going 5-11 with a 4.66 ERA and three saves. The Braves drafted him out of Spring Branch High School in the fourth round of 1968, and he reached Atlanta at 19, the youngest player in the majors in 1969. A December 1972 traffic collision near Uvalde, Texas, in which a car struck the vehicle carrying him and teammate Jim Breazeale head-on, left him with a dislocated hip and cost him all of 1973. Cincinnati took him in the Rule 5 draft and returned him to the Braves on July 1, 1974, and Baltimore acquired him that August for a minor league pitcher. He sat out 1975 and 1976, tried a comeback in the Houston Astros system in 1977, and left pro ball after a 6.50 ERA at Double-A Columbus. He died in Batesville, Arkansas, in 2017.
