1971 Topps #7 Jim Holt

About Jim Holt
Holt's 1970 season was his first as a regular, platooning with Brant Alyea over 142 games. He hit .266 with three home runs and 40 RBIs, then went 0-for-5 in the Twins' three-game ALCS loss to Baltimore. His #7 is a first-series rookie card, with Minnesota. The 1971 season brought a .259 average and one home run as the Twins fell to fifth place at 74-86.
Jim Holt was a left-handed-hitting outfielder and first baseman who played all nine of his major league seasons, 1968 to 1976, for the Minnesota Twins and Oakland Athletics. He grew up in Graham, North Carolina, enlisted in the Army in 1963 and played ball while stationed in Germany before the Kansas City Athletics signed him in 1966. Minnesota took him in the Rule 5 draft after he hit .312 for Peninsula in 1967, and he debuted on April 17, 1968. His best season was 1973, when he hit .297 with 11 home runs and 58 RBIs in 132 games. Traded to Oakland in August 1974, he became a pinch-hitter and defensive replacement, and his two-run pinch single in Game Four helped Oakland to a 5-2 win over the Dodgers in that year's World Series. He finished with a .265 average, 19 home runs and 177 RBIs in 707 games, then played in the Mexican League in 1977.
