About this card

The story on this card

Frank Howard of the Washington Senators won the 1970 American League home run title with 44, ahead of Harmon Killebrew of the Twins with 41 and Carl Yastrzemski of the Red Sox with 40. Howard also led the league with 126 RBI and 132 walks. Killebrew, the reigning MVP, finished third in the 1970 voting and hit two homers as Baltimore swept Minnesota in the ALCS. Yastrzemski hit .329, finishing second to Alex Johnson for the batting title by less than a thousandth of a point, and was named All-Star Game MVP. The card is 1971 Topps #65, in the first series, one of the League Leaders cards numbered #61-72.

Frank Howard - the 6-foot-7 "Capital Punisher": 1960 NL Rookie of the Year with the Dodgers, then a Washington Senators star who twice led the American League in home runs and was a four-time All-Star. Harmon Killebrew was the Twins' quiet, powerfully built slugger of the 1960s, a six-time American League home run champion who hit more homers in the decade than anyone else and won the 1969 AL Most Valuable Player award. Carl Yastrzemski, 'Yaz,' gave Boston all 23 of his seasons, following Ted Williams in left field. He won the 1967 Triple Crown and MVP, three batting titles, seven Gold Gloves and 18 All-Star nods, and reached Cooperstown on the first ballot in 1989.
