The story on this card
Three pitchers shared the 1970 American League wins title at 24, and card #69 in the 1971 Topps League Leaders subset lists them together. Mike Cuellar went 24-8 and Dave McNally 24-9 for the Orioles, who won 108 games and took the AL East by 15 games. Jim Perry went 24-12 for the Twins. Baltimore swept Minnesota in the ALCS, and in Game 1 Cuellar hit a grand slam off Perry. The Orioles then beat the Reds in five games in the World Series, with McNally hitting a grand slam of his own in Game 3. Perry won the AL Cy Young Award that year.
Mike Cuellar - Cuban left-hander who spent years in the minors before a screwball turned his career around in 1964, then won 20 or more games four times for Baltimore, shared the 1969 Cy Young Award and helped the Orioles win the 1970 World Series. Dave McNally was a Baltimore left-hander, a three-time All-Star who won 20 games in four straight seasons from 1968 through 1971, shut out the Dodgers to clinch the 1966 World Series, and lent his name to the 1975 ruling that broke the reserve clause. Cleveland right-hander Jim Perry struck out 4 Yankees in 2 scoreless relief innings on May 12, 1959, protecting a 7-6 lead. His strikeout victims included Mickey Mantle and Elston Howard.
