The story on this card
The 1970 American League ERA race on #67 ran from Diego Segui of the Athletics at 2.56 over 162 innings, to Jim Palmer of the Orioles at 2.71, to Clyde Wright of the Angels at 2.83. Palmer made 39 starts, completed 17 and led the league with 305 innings and five shutouts on the way to a 20-10 record. Wright went 22-12, no-hit the Athletics on July 3, and pitched in the All-Star Game eleven days later. Palmer's Orioles beat the Reds in the World Series, four games to one. The card belongs to the League Leaders subset, #61-72, in the first series of the 1971 Topps set.
Diego Segui - Cuban-born forkball specialist who pitched for six major-league clubs from 1962 to 1977, led the American League in ERA in 1970, and is the only man to play for both the Seattle Pilots and the Seattle Mariners. Jim Palmer was Baltimore's ace right-hander, a three-time Cy Young winner and four-time Gold Glover who worked on three World Series champions, beat Sandy Koufax in Koufax's final appearance, and reached the Hall of Fame in 1990. Clyde Wright - Left-handed Angels pitcher who won 22 games and no-hit Oakland during his 1970 comeback season after learning a screwball in Puerto Rican winter ball under Jim Fregosi.
