1971 Topps #84 Marcel Lachemann

About Marcel Lachemann
Lachemann's best season had been 1970, when he went 3-3 with a 2.78 ERA in 41 relief appearances for Oakland. The next year gave him one game: on April 25 he allowed two earned runs in one-third of an inning, his last major league appearance. Topps printed him with the Oakland Athletics on #84, a recognized rookie card from the first series.
Marcel Lachemann was a right-handed reliever for the Oakland Athletics from 1969 to 1971, then worked as a pitching coach, manager and front-office aide. A Los Angeles native, he attended Susan Miller Dorsey High School, like his brothers Bill and Rene, and then the University of Southern California. He signed with the Kansas City Athletics as a free agent on February 7, 1963, and debuted with the team in Oakland on June 4, 1969, allowing two earned runs in a 6-1 loss to Baltimore. His first win came on June 16, three scoreless innings in the opener of a doubleheader against the Kansas City Royals. He finished 7-4 with a 3.44 ERA and five saves, and his playing career ended in 1974 with the Single-A West Palm Beach Expos. He was California's pitching coach from 1984 to 1992, then joined younger brother Rene's staff with the new Florida Marlins. On May 17, 1994 he replaced Buck Rodgers as Angels manager. His 1995 team led Seattle by 13 games at one point in August, finished 78-67 and lost a one-game playoff in Seattle; he resigned on August 7, 1996. He later coached pitchers for the Angels and Rockies and for Team USA at the 2006 World Baseball Classic and 2008 Beijing Olympics.
