1971 Topps #135 Rick Monday

About Rick Monday
Monday batted .245 with 18 home runs and 56 RBI in 1971, the season Oakland won its first American League West title. He went 0 for 3 as Baltimore swept the ALCS. That November the Athletics traded him to the Cubs for pitcher Ken Holtzman. His #135, from the second series, shows him with the Athletics.
Robert James Monday Jr. was the first overall pick in the inaugural 1965 MLB draft, signed by the Kansas City Athletics out of Arizona State, where he had led the Sun Devils to the 1965 College World Series title. A center fielder, he broke into the majors in September 1966 and played 19 big league seasons for the Kansas City/Oakland Athletics, Chicago Cubs and Los Angeles Dodgers, finishing his career with 241 home runs and a .264 average. A two-time All-Star, he reached the postseason with two different clubs and won a World Series with the Dodgers in 1981. He hit the pennant-clinching home run in Game 5 of that year's NLCS. In a 1976 incident at Dodger Stadium, he grabbed an American flag from two protesters trying to burn it on the field, and President Gerald Ford phoned to congratulate him. After retiring as a player he became a Dodgers broadcaster in 1985 and later called games on both radio and television.
