The story on this card
Washington's Frank Howard drove in 126 runs in 1970 to lead the American League, with Tony Conigliaro of the Red Sox second at 116 and Baltimore's Boog Powell third at 114. Howard also hit 44 home runs and drew a league-high 132 walks. Conigliaro's 116 was a career high, and Powell added 35 home runs. Card #63 in the 1971 Topps League Leaders subset (#61-72), a series one card, lists Howard with the Senators, Conigliaro with the Red Sox and Powell with the Orioles. The Red Sox traded Conigliaro to the Angels in October 1970.
Frank Howard - the 6-foot-7 "Capital Punisher": 1960 NL Rookie of the Year with the Dodgers, then a Washington Senators star who twice led the American League in home runs and was a four-time All-Star. Tony Conigliaro - Revere-born Red Sox outfielder who became the youngest home run champion in American League history in 1965. A Jack Hamilton fastball struck him in the face on August 18, 1967, severely damaging his left retina. Boog Powell - huge left-handed slugger who moved from left field to first base and became the power source of Baltimore's four pennant-winning lineups between 1966 and 1971, hitting alongside Frank and Brooks Robinson and taking the 1970 American League MVP Award.
