About this card

The story on this card

The 1970 National League batting race put an Atlanta outfielder far ahead of the field. Rico Carty won the title at .366, the highest average in the majors since Ted Williams hit .388 in 1957. Joe Torre of St. Louis followed at .325 on 203 hits, with Pittsburgh catcher Manny Sanguillen also at .325 in third place on 158 hits. Card #62 in the 1971 Topps League Leaders subset (#61-72), a series one card, pictures the three men with the Braves, Cardinals and Pirates in that order. Carty hit that average in 136 games and started the All-Star Game as the first write-in selection.

Rico Carty, a Dominican-born outfielder, hit .299 over fifteen big-league seasons, capturing the 1970 National League batting title at .366 and helping the Atlanta Braves win their first division championship in 1969. Joe Torre was a nine-time All-Star catcher and infielder who won the 1971 National League MVP award with St. Louis, then managed the Yankees to four World Series titles. He entered the Hall of Fame in 2014. Manny Sanguillen - Panama-born catcher for the Pirates' 1970s division winners and 1971 and 1979 World Series champions, a free-swinging bad-ball hitter who rarely walked and batted .296 for his career.
