1971 Topps #4 Vic Davalillo

About Vic Davalillo
First-series card #4 still lists Davalillo with St. Louis, but the Cardinals traded him and Nelson Briles to Pittsburgh on January 29, 1971, for Matty Alou and George Brunet. Davalillo batted .285 in 99 games for the Pirates, with 84 hits and 10 steals. He appeared in 61 games in the outfield and 16 at first base.
Vic Davalillo began professional baseball as a pitcher in Cincinnati's organization before becoming an outfielder. With Jacksonville, he won the International League batting title at .346 in 1962, then reached Cleveland the following spring. His 16 major league seasons took him through six clubs and produced 1,122 hits and a .279 average. He played on championship teams in Pittsburgh and Oakland, then laid down a two-out bunt hit that began the Dodgers' ninth-inning rally in Game 3 of the 1977 NLCS. His winter career in Venezuela lasted 30 seasons and included four batting titles and 1,505 hits. He joined the inaugural class of the Venezuelan Baseball Hall of Fame in 2003 and gave baseball clinics to young people in his homeland.
