About Red Schoendienst
Schoendienst's 1971 Cardinals went 90-72 and finished second in the NL East, seven games behind Pittsburgh. Joe Torre won the MVP award, batting .363 with 24 home runs and 137 RBI, and Bob Gibson no-hit the Pirates on August 14. Schoendienst's 1971 Topps manager card is second-series #239.
Red Schoendienst was a switch-hitting second baseman who played 19 major league seasons for the Cardinals, Giants and Braves. A ten-time All-Star, he finished with a .289 average, 2,449 hits and 84 home runs. He led the National League with 26 stolen bases as a rookie left fielder in 1945 and hit a career-best .342 in 1953. His 14th-inning home run off Ted Gray won the 1950 All-Star Game for the National League. Schoendienst played on World Series champions with St. Louis in 1946 and Milwaukee in 1957. After a tuberculosis diagnosis, surgeons removed part of a lung in February 1959; he appeared in five major league games later that year. He later compiled a 1,041-955 record managing the Cardinals and coached their 1982 champions. The Veterans Committee elected him to the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1989.
