1971 Topps #240 Clyde Wright

About Clyde Wright
Wright's 2.83 ERA in 1970 earned him the American League Comeback Player of the Year award, and he took the loss in the All-Star Game, giving up Jim Hickman's 12th-inning single at Riverfront Stadium. Topps gave him two 1971 cards: #67, the American League ERA leaders panel in the first series shared with Diego Segui and Jim Palmer, and solo card #240 in the second series. In 1971 he went 16-17 with a 2.99 ERA and a career-high 135 strikeouts.
Clyde Wright was a left-handed pitcher who spent ten major league seasons with the California Angels (1966-73), Milwaukee Brewers (1974) and Texas Rangers (1975). A Tennessee farm boy who starred at Carson-Newman College, he was selected by the Angels in the sixth round of the 1965 draft and reached the majors the following June, beating the Twins on a four-hitter in his debut. After going 1-8 in 1969, he learned a screwball while playing winter ball in Puerto Rico under Jim Fregosi and returned in 1970 to win 22 games, throw a no-hitter against Oakland and earn his only All-Star selection. He later pitched three seasons for the Yomiuri Giants in Japan, alongside Sadaharu Oh and under manager Shigeo Nagashima. He is a member of the NAIA Hall of Fame from his college pitching career.
