1971 Topps #105 Tony Conigliaro

About Tony Conigliaro
Conigliaro appears on two 1971 Topps cards. League Leaders card #63 still lists him with the Boston Red Sox, alongside Frank Howard and Boog Powell, while his own card, #105, shows him with the California Angels. His vision worsened that season, with a loss of depth perception and blind spots. He hit 4 home runs with 15 RBI and 23 runs, went on the disabled list in July and retired from baseball at the end of the year.
Tony Conigliaro was a Revere, Massachusetts kid who signed with the Red Sox out of high school and made the big club at nineteen. On the first pitch of his first Fenway Park at-bat, in the 1964 home opener, he hit a home run. He led the American League with 32 homers in 1965, the youngest home run champion in AL history, and when he reached 100 career home runs in July 1967 he was the youngest American Leaguer ever to get there. On August 18, 1967, during Boston's pennant-winning Impossible Dream season, a Jack Hamilton fastball struck him in the face, fracturing his left cheekbone and severely damaging his left retina. He missed the rest of that season and all of 1968, then came back in 1969 for 20 home runs and Comeback Player of the Year honors, and followed that with career highs of 36 homers and 116 RBI in 1970. The Red Sox traded him to the California Angels that October, and fading vision held him to .222 in 74 games in 1971. A 21-game return to Boston in 1975 closed his playing career. A heart attack and stroke in 1982 left him severely impaired until his death in 1990 at forty-five.
