1971 Topps #106 Tom Dukes

About Tom Dukes
Tom Dukes pitched in 53 games for San Diego in 1970 and earned 10 saves. His 1971 Topps #106, from the first series, still lists the Padres. In Baltimore his former Padres teammate Pat Dobson became one of the 1971 Orioles' four 20-game winners, while Dukes was credited with four saves, tied for second on the club, and lost five of his six decisions.
Thomas Earl Dukes, born August 31, 1942 in Knoxville, Tennessee, was a right-handed relief pitcher who reached the majors in his eighth pro season after signing with the New York Yankees in 1960. Traded to the Milwaukee Braves in 1965 and passed to the Houston Astros in a six-player deal after 1966, Dukes debuted in August 1967. He was selected by the San Diego Padres in the 1968 expansion draft, then traded along with Pat Dobson to the Baltimore Orioles after the 1970 season. With the 1971 Orioles he pitched out of a bullpen for a staff that threw 71 complete games, and he appeared in the World Series against the Pittsburgh Pirates, working four scoreless innings across Games 3 and 5. He closed his career in 1972 with the California Angels. Over six seasons Dukes went 5-16 with a 4.35 ERA and 21 saves in 161 games, all in relief.
