About this card

This is one of the 44 Rookie Stars cards in the 1971 Topps set, each carrying two or three players under a club, league or position title. All 44 count as rookie cards.

The story on this card

By 1971 the outfielder was out of the big leagues for good, playing that year for the Class A Lodi Padres and in the Mexican League. Topps still carried him as a Padres Rookies subject on #262, this time paired with Dave Robinson, whose rookie card it is. The card came in the second series. Jim Williams was a San Diego Padres outfielder in the club's first two seasons, hitting .282 over 24 games in 1969 and 1970. A 1968 expansion-draft pick from the Dodgers system, he retired in 1973 at age 26.

Robinson's first start, on September 12, 1970, against Cincinnati, brought two hits, two walks and a stolen base in two at-bats. On September 25 and 26 he hit both of his major league home runs, off Skip Pitlock and Juan Marichal, and finished at .316 in 15 games. Card #262, a second-series Rookie Stars card shared with Jim Williams, shows both men with the Padres and is Robinson's rookie card. In April 1971 he pinch hit in seven games. Dave Robinson was a San Diego outfielder, the first player the Padres signed, in 1968. A switch-hitter from La Jolla and San Diego State, he played 22 games in 1970 and 1971; his brother Bruce was a major league catcher.
